Cooking, cleaning, laundry, yard work, it all needs to be done. And it never seems to end. Whether you are a mom, dad, grandparent or even just single living on your own, I would be willing to bet you have at least some, if not all of these chores on a very regular basis.
Most people however do not associate these things with anything that is considered really fun or enjoyable. I for one used to hate cooking! Since I stay home with my kids I felt like I was ALWAYS in the kitchen. It was one of those never ending chores where I felt like I would cook, we would eat, I would clean it all up, and then we would do it all over again just a couple hours later. Ugh!
Then one day, I had what I like to consider a “come to Jesus” moment. It dawned on me that unless I somehow won the lotto and could hire someone else to do everything for me, I was not getting out of this cooking and cleaning business anytime soon, so I had better find a way to enjoy it more!
That is when the word distraction came to mind. Distraction is such a wonderful thing when used in the right setting. Anytime my kids fall and get hurt I use distraction to take their mind off the pain, so why couldn’t I do the same thing to take my mind off of the “pain” of cooking, cleaning, or laundry?
And so I did……
With the help of an app on my phone called Audible. For those of you who have never heard of it, Audible is an app that you can download to your smart phone, which then allows you access to thousands of different digital audiobooks, radio,TV programs, and audio versions of magazines and newspapers.
I love this app for many reasons, first being that I rarely ever get a chance to actually sit down and read. Second, because I actually learn better and retain information better by listening rather than reading.
But here is the best part…
I was able to find a long list of stuff that was either entertaining or inspiring and I now turn it on EVERY time I am either cooking, cleaning, or doing laundry. It sounds crazy but I actually look forward to these things sometimes now, because I look forward to what is next in my book!
It makes the time spent doing these household things pass so much faster and I feel like I am getting in a little “Me” time while I am at it!
If you totally dread doing any or all of the chores listed above, I would encourage you to at least give this a try! There are certain things in life that we cannot get out of doing, but we can change our attitudes and our mind set about doing them!
And just like the saying goes……” If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life!”
