This week on the blog I thought I would talk about your kitchen sink!  More specifically what you store underneath it, and what steps you need to take to make sure it is organized and stays that way!

This is one area of the kitchen that can get out control real fast!  Not only that, but it is one of the areas that is the most disgusting, dirty, and before you know it you find yourself afraid to even open those cupboards doors!  Yikes!

I am here to tell you though that it does not have to be that way.  With just a few easy steps, your worries about what you might find lurking in the corners of that cupboard will totally vanish!

Step#1 – Pull EVERYTHING out!  This step is never fun, but so incredibly important!  You need to start with a clean slate and this is the only way to get there.

Step#2 – Go thru everything and throw away anything that is old, expired, or that you no longer use!  Remember…when it comes to getting organized, LESS IS MORE!  I will talk more on this in a little bit.

Step#3 – Wipe it all down.  Wipe everything from the bottom of the cupboard, to the walls inside the cupboard, and anything that came out of the cupboard! Anything from cleaning supply bottles, baskets, bins, and even the insides of your cabinet doors! Wipe it all!  The cleaner the better!

Step#4 – Sort everything you want to keep under your sink into “Like” groups. This will differ for everyone, but some examples would be, cleaning supplies in one group, kitchen towels and dishcloths in another group, dish washing gel or tabs in another group, you get the hint!

Step# 5– Find or buy the appropriate storage to hold all of your groups together, label them appropriately, and put it all away!

Here is what I have done under my sink….

I bought my containers at Target in the bathroom section. I love these because they were just the right height and width to hold things like cleaning towels and supplies. They were also not super spendy, I think they were only $3 or $4 a piece.

When I decided what to put under my sink I tried to think in terms of necessity and convenience.

The first bin holds my cleaning towels, these are microfiber towels that I use for things like counters, windows, dusting, and any other general cleaning!

The second bin holds all of my cleaning supplies.  As you can see I am very selective and very basic with my supplies.  I am not one who needs a different supply for every cleaning occasion and prefer to keep it very simple.  It has worked really well for me this way, and so I think I will stick with it!

Here is what you will find in my cleaning supplies bin.

Cleaning supplies I store under the kitchen sink

I use Mrs. Myers for almost everything.  I just LOVE all of their different scents, I also feel their products are relatively safe, while still doing the job!  In my collection I have an all purpose spray, a glass spray, soap refills, all purpose spray refills, Ecos dish rinsing agent, and a dish scrubber….that is it!

Next up I have a pull out drawer that holds my garbage bags. I buy them in bulk at Costco and this holds them all very nicely! Plus they are easy to roll and grab out of a drawer!

The next bin is where I hold my hand towels and dish rags.  As you can see I really try to keep these to a minimum.  In the past I had an entire drawer devoted to random rags and towels, however, that method just seemed to give me more laundry!  I also found that other dirty rags would just sit around smelling up my kitchen, just begging to be washed! Ewww

The last bin is where I hold all of our dish tabs. We buy our dish tabs at Costco, in bulk! It is so easy just to dump them all in, and even more easy to grab them every night after dinner!

That’s it!  Like I said, this might look a little different for you and your needs, the key to remember is to keep it simple!  Less is truly more!

I hope this has inspired you to get under your sink clean and organized once and for all!

Happy Organizing Friends!
